Writing an academic essay means fashioning a coherent set of ideas into an argument. Because essays are essentially linear—they offer one idea at a time—they must present their ideas in the order that makes most sense to a reader. Successfully structuring an essay means attending to a reader's logic.
To write such an essay, the writer must have real and extensive knowledge about the subject. There is no scope for the writer’s feelings or emotions in an expository essay. The General Writing test consists of two writing tasks of 150 words and 250 words. In Task 1, test takers are asked to respond to a situation by writing a letter, for example, requesting information or explaining a situation. In Task 2, test takers write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.
